I think it’s safe to say that most of us want good skin. As adolescent teens, we usually attempt to find the right combination of products to take with us into adulthood and most of the time, we expect that any skin problems from our teens will naturally sort themselves out when we reach a certain age. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. There are so many factors involved in taking care of the largest organ in our body, and it can often be frustrating.

We’ll do pretty much anything for good skin, from light therapy to laser, and then, of course, there are surgical procedures—all of which can come at a pretty penny. But, what if there is a cheaper, more effective way to better-looking skin? It’s always good to start with evaluating your situation and the products that go with your skincare routine. Below, Benisha Williams, our go-to Skincare Specialist, provides five common mistakes we make in our skincare routine.

Mistake #1: Using the incorrect products for your skin type.

Before determining how to make a positive improvement to our skin, we first need to identify our skin type. It’s extremely common for consumers to blindly purchase skincare based on ‘recommendations’ and marketing before researching if the product is actually suitable for them. How do you find out if a product is not for you? Sudden onset irritation and change in texture and sensitivity are not good signs. Breakouts or ‘purging’ as it’s called is normal, however, if you find no relief after a number of weeks then it’s probably not for you.

Mistake #2: Not double cleansing before bed.

I am a firm believer in the ritual that is double cleansing daily. Cleaning the skin twice has great benefits, and will help to revitalise and brighten dull, lacklustre skin. For the first cleanse I usually recommend an oil-based liquid or balm cleanser. My oily allies, this is suitable for you as well. This first step is key in dissolving any excess makeup, SPF, and removing sebum, dirt, and pollution that has accumulated throughout the day. After product is removed, the second cleanse is essential to get deep within the pores and clear out all the grime, improving the appearance of the skin, and regulation of sebum production. Choose a suitable second cleanser for your specific skin type, as previously mentioned.

Mistake #3: Not using sunscreen ALL year-round. Even on cloudy days.

When it comes to cellular degeneration, the sun does exactly this. Even on cloudy and the dullest of days UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin through cloud cover and cause premature ageing and photodamage. This ultraviolet ray can also pass through glass so I’d recommend wearing SPF indoors as well. There are approximately 500 times more UVA rays present in the environment than UVB (the rays responsible for tanning and sunburn) so I cannot reiterate enough the use of sunscreen.

Mistake #4: Over exfoliation.

The market for chemical exfoliants has boomed in recent years, and since lockdown, sales have soared. When using acids within your regime, doing more than is necessary could cause long term damage. When over-exfoliating the skin, the barrier function designed to protect water loss coming out, and irritants entering becomes compromised. This leads to dehydration, capillaries become damaged causing red flushing (erythema), and acne will likely worsen due to the natural oils being stripped from the skin.

Mistake #5: Not drinking enough water.

Hydration is key! Drinking the recommended daily amount of water is the most inexpensive thing you can do for your skin. Without water, the skin (which is made up of 80% water) cannot regenerate at its optimal function. Hydration will improve your complexion, give a plump youthful appearance, help improve dry, tight skin, and balance the PH resulting in anti-ageing benefits.
